Target Audience
This workshop, sponsored by the Northern Marianas Humanities Council and facilitated by Dr. Michael Clement Jr, is open to the public. To be considered, participants must (1) be highly motivated; (2) have a strong interest in the history of the Mariana Islands; and (3) possess good writing skills. Special priority will be given to classroom history and social studies teachers/instructors.
Course Overview
This Intensive one week (40 hour) course provides participants with the basic tools to conduct historical research in the Marianas Islands. Students will learn how to identify historically significant topics; develop a scholarly research proposal; navigate local archives; conduct oral history; and become familiar with the technical aspects of writing a scholarly research paper. In addition to methodology, the course will familiarize students with the ethical concerns and cultural/historical implications of research in small island communities such as the Northern Marianas. Each participant will produce a short research paper by the conclusion of the workshop. Certificates will be awarded participants who successfully complete the workshop.
How to Apply
Interested indiviudals are requested to fill out a workshop application form. The workshop will be limited to 15 participants and selection will be competitive. It is open to the general public. Priority will be given to classroom history and social studies teachers and instructors. Completed applications must be received by the Council no later than close of business on 1 June 2015.
About the Facilitator
Dr. Clement is an Assistant Professor of History at the University of Guam. He holds an MA in Micronesian Studies from the University of Guam and a PhD in Pacific History from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Much of Clement’s recent work examines the political and cultural history of post-World War II Guam and the Northern Marianas through the lens of Chamorro music.
